奥地利著名医学博士海尔漫·格迈纳先生创办的SOS村在我国正式诞生了，它开创了我国以家庭形式抚养孤儿的新时代。某市SOS村的妈妈们做好一切准备工作，迎来了第一批孩子。夏悦领走二牛和岚岚；海桃领去毛毛；穆秀华领养了春萍和春秀两姐妹。8岁的二牛由于自幼失去父母，性情古怪，夏悦想尽办法与他亲近，却屡次被他拒绝。而同时，二牛又是一个极富正义感和同情心的孩子，对穆家孩子春萍经常打骂妹妹春秀很不满，每当春秀受到欺侮时，二牛总是挺身而出保护她。岚岚是个聪明、懂事的小姑娘，可嫉妒心很强，不容人。看到夏悦妈妈对二牛的关心，心里酸溜溜的，所以经常在夏悦面前说二牛的坏话。一天，岚岚利用二牛对春萍的不满，给他出谋划策，故意让二牛犯错误以便提高自己在妈妈面前的威信，独搅妈妈的爱。单纯的二牛没想到因此惹出了一场祸。全村大会上，穆秀华主张把二牛送走，夏悦不同意，她向大家讲述着二牛进村后的变化，并自责自己是个不合格的妈妈。夏悦的一席话教育了二牛，他哭着向大家承认的错误。其他孩子也勇敢地站出来，证明是岚岚给二牛出的主意。岚岚觉得没脸见人了，跑出了儿童村。为了寻找岚岚，夏悦病倒了。岚岚来到夏悦的床前，向妈妈承认了自己的错误。第二天，夏悦支撑着病体去为孩子们做饭，发现孩子们为了照顾她累得倚在楼梯上睡着了，一股暖流涌上夏悦的心头。孩子们醒了，望着为自己日夜操荣的妈妈，二牛再也按捺不住内心激动，一头扑到夏悦的怀里，深情地呼唤着：妈妈……
